Singapore is a small country with a high population density and limited land area for vehicles. Hence, our public transport has to be convenient to allow people to commute smoothly and sustainably to minimise environmental pollution. In this month’s Quick Polls, let’s take a look at Singaporeans’ mode of payment for public transport and the ‘green’ ways in which they commute.

3 out of 4 (75%) of those we polled use an EZ Link / concession card to pay for their public transport. This is not surprising as it is the most affordable option. An overwhelming 99% use cards to pay for their public transport, which contributes to a convenient and hassle-free experience. In addition to being a generally smooth commute, public transport is also environmentally friendly.

What actions are you taking to make your commute greener and more sustainable?

Walk for short trips
Cycle instead
Take public transport instead of private transport

Based on 435 people polled as of 30 November 2022

Almost 1 in 2 (45%) we surveyed walk for short trips and 4 in 10 (42%) opt for public transport to make their commute a ‘green’ one. 1 in 10 (13%) cycle. With our rail network expanding and more cycling paths coming up, hopefully more can choose to adopt sustainable modes of transport as our public transport system continues to improve.
