Worldwide, the COVID-19 pandemic has hit many economies hard and resulted in significant job losses. We in Singapore have not been spared, but there is hope for a better year ahead.

In this month’s Quick Polls, let’s learn about what people think about the future of Singapore’s economy and employment!

It’s no wonder that a quarter of those we polled feel optimistic about where our economy is going 😊! Despite many retrenchments and job losses, it is heartening to know that resident employment grew by 28,900 in the fourth quarter of last year1. With the help of various job schemes, Singaporeans are finding work and even opportunities in sectors new to them. So, what are people looking for when choosing a job?

Which is the most important factor when choosing a job?

Shorter traveling time
5%
Higher salary
32%
Better company benefits
16%
Workplace environment
47%

Based on 109 people polled as of 31 March 2021.

Almost half placed workplace environment as the most important factor for them, with higher salary coming in second. Although earning a higher wage is a common priority among job-seekers, we cannot discount the importance of having a positive workplace environment. Safe and comfortable surroundings and a conducive work culture that supports employee growth makes people look forward to each work day. In these uncertain times, many are looking for stability and a good (or better still, great!) environment sure helps to lift spirits!
