A food paradise – that’s what many Singaporeans think of our sunny island! But before we fill our bellies with delicious food, it’s important to first make sure that what we’re eating is safe and hygienic.

In this month’s Quick Polls, let’s find out how people feel about food hygiene in Singapore!

Surprisingly, only 6 out of 10 people (63%) we polled felt that Singapore has done enough to ensure food hygiene safety. Given that Singapore has a good food safety record1, one would expect the number to be a little higher.

Do you feel that the hygiene standards in food places are up to standard?

Yes

No
41%

Based on 493 people polled as of 30 November 2021

Roughly the same proportion (only 6 out of 10 people we polled) feel that the hygiene standards in food places are acceptable, suggesting that there is some room for improvement in this area.

With a new food safety licensing framework taking effect from 1 January 20232, food establishments will be assessed on their food safety track record and ongoing performance, as compared with the current annual grading review. This should motivate food establishments to maintain consistent hygiene standards and give Singaporeans greater assurance on food safety!
