Public housing in Singapore, endearingly known as HDB flats (short for Housing Development Board), are recognised as worthy assets to Singaporeans.

Read on to discover What Singapore Thinks about home ownership and HDBs!

First off, the majority (87%) of Singaporeans consider home ownership as a necessity. Afterall, ensuring a roof over our heads takes priority, right?
Did you know?
All HDB flats must be given back to the state after 99 years – not only for the sake of future generations, but also for other social and practical reasons (e.g., making way for redevelopment plans and ensuring the building’s safety).

4 out of 5 Singaporeans have expressed concern about the 99-year lease imposed on HDB flats while only 1 in 5 Singaporeans are not concerned at all.

So, if given a choice, how many years would Singaporeans prefer HDB leases to be?

Needless to say, with the pricey tags that come with HDBs, most of us (63%) would rather have our flat leases to run indefinitely!

However, if all HDB flats are on freehold leases, our little island may quickly run out of land to build new buildings. Besides the land scarcity, time will also take its toll on the buildings’ mechanical and electrical systems too.

Be that as it may, having freehold flat leases will surely be a dream come true for most Singaporeans!
