Singapore is taking the initiative to minimise the usage of plastic bags to protect our earth. Recently, there are talks about charging for plastic bags at supermarkets, which will most likely happen next year.
So, should we implement a plastic bag charge in Singapore? Let’s take a look at What Singapore Thinks about this!
It was a close call, but most Singaporeans find that the idea of paying for disposable plastic bags is a good one!
Fact:
“Did you know that in 2019, about 200,000 tonnes of disposables were generated by Singaporeans? That’s enough to fill 400 Olympic-size swimming pools!”
The majority of Singaporeans (49%) agree that the notion of paying for disposable plastic bags will help reduce the amount of plastic waste generated.
About 7 in 10 Singaporeans are willing to pay at least 5 cents for a plastic bag, while 3 in 10 Singaporeans would rather not pay for it at all.
Although paying for disposable plastic bags may not be the only answer to tackling the excessive use of disposables, it can serve as an important reminder to shoppers to take and use bags mindfully!
Bring Your Own Bag
Survey findings from this HappyDot.sg poll conducted in June 2021 shows that presently, only 1 in 5 Singaporeans bring their own bags to the supermarket all the time.
Let’s do our part for the environment and bring our own reusable bags when heading out for our grocery runs!
