What is better for Singaporean youths today – focusing on academic excellence or caring for their well-being?
This month, let’s read all about What Singapore Thinks is more important for a youth’s development!
Most Singaporeans (48%) voiced that mental health is of utmost importance for youths’ development.
Contrastingly, getting good grades is no longer regarded as the most important for youths. Furthermore, 92% of Singaporeans feel that focusing on academic achievements usually comes at some/much expense of a youth’s well-being.
Having said that, do Singaporeans agree that there are more pros than cons for youths to focus on their studies?
Understandably, 2 out of 3 Singaporeans find that focusing on academic achievements do bring about more benefits for youths – even though doing so may be at the expense of some/much of their well-being.
As we dived deeper, we found out that out of those who agreed, most Singaporeans believe that achieving good grades in school will benefit the youths in future.
On the other hand, the top reason why 1 out of 3 Singaporeans against focusing too much on studies is that doing so may lead to an unhealthy over-emphasis on the youths’ academic achievements. In the long-term, this may create a negative impact on their well-being.
Ultimately, we must understand that times have changed.
Today, it is important to be able to strike a balance between emphasising on academic achievements and caring for our youths’ well-being. This may be a challenge – but hopefully, we’ll be able to find the sweet spot for them in time to come!
