We asked Singaporeans: What Matters Most in a Career?

In a recent survey, we asked HappyDotters across different age groups and career stages about what matters most to them in their careers. Across all ages, the top 3 associations with career health include good work-life balance (70%), job security and stability (56%) and job satisfaction (55%). But are there any differences that we can spot among the different career stages?

What do fresh graduates and mid-career professionals value in their career?
For those in the 25–34 age group, priorities shift toward fair compensation and benefits (57%) as well as having clear opportunities for progression (55%). Meanwhile, those aged 35–44 also showed stronger emphasis on being compensated fairly (56%).


Seasoned Workers: A Shift to Intrinsic Motivation
Interestingly, HappyDotters aged 55 and above show a shift towards intrinsic motivators. They are more likely to associate their careers with making a meaningful impact or contribution (40%), opportunities for continuous learning (39%) and a sense of personal fulfilment (33%). Compared to younger groups, they place lower emphasis on job stability (52%), compensation (47%) and career progression (45%), suggesting a shift from external rewards to internal satisfaction as career drivers.

Are HappyDotters engaging in career development activities?
Those aged 25-34 are most actively engaged in career development activities, with updating their CV or resume topping the list (43%), followed by searching for a new job (37%) and applying for a new job (34%). This suggests a strong focus on enhancing employability during early to mid-career stages. Among those aged 35–44, skill-building is more prominent, with 33% of them attending trainings or courses.
